Garifuna Public Murals: Art That Builds Identity and Community

These vibrant artworks serve not only as powerful expressions of identity and pride but also as visual storytelling tools that celebrate Garifuna history and culture. For children especially, seeing their heritage reflected in public spaces helps nurture a strong and positive ethnic identity and higher self-esteem. Beyond their cultural significance, murals also play a role in transforming and beautifying areas that have been historically neglected, turning walls into sources of pride and education.

Together with friends and family, I was able to secure the necessary funds to create this public work of art for the entire community to enjoy. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with a professional muralist (Denny Abraham) in 2022 on earlier pieces, making this an ongoing journey of artistic expression and cultural preservation.
